Hello all,
As you’ve probably noticed by now, I’m on a bit of a Harry Hole reading spree currently! Here’s another to add to it! Nemesis.
Some unclear, grainy CCTV footage shows a man walk into a bank and put a gun to the cashiers head. He gives her an ultimatum – give him his money by the time he counts to 25 or die.
“I’m going to die. And it makes no sense…I’m staring down the muzzle of a gun and I know that’s where it will come from. The messenger of death….Everyone asks what the meaning of life is, but no one asks about the meaning of death.”
This threat is one that is executed with fine precision…
Detective Harry Hole is going through a turbulent time. He is still mourning the death of his police partner, his girlfriend is away in a Russia and to top it all off, an old flame gets in touch. Could anything stranger happen?
“Losing your life is not the worst thing that can happen. The worst thing is to lose your reason for living.”
Well yes actually they could!
Harry goes to dinner with his old flame only to wake up the next morning, with zero recollection of the last 12 hours. That same morning, the girl he went to dinner with is found dead in her bed, shot.
“The time was exact 15.21.10, and that was the exact moment the whole thing started.”
If things couldn’t be going any worse then Harry starts receiving emails from an anonymous source, threatening him. Is he being framed?
“Shall we play? Let’s imagine you’ve been to dinner with a woman and the next day she’s found dead.
What do you do?
S2MN”
How do you catch a killer when you’re the number one suspect? Well that’s something Harry Hole has to contend with whilst keeping his emotions at bay and he has to investigate this without ever admitting he knew her or risk being arrested as prime suspect.
“A moral person is someone who accepts the consequences of their own morality…not those of others.”
This has to be my favourite Harry Hole novel so far! It kept me hooked and something happened at every turn and even the outcome of the case was unexpected. This is a book about blood, revenge and vendettas.
Let’s see what’s up next for Harry in his next novel, The Devil’s Star.
