“We lose ourselves in books, we find ourselves there too."

“Men heap together the mistakes of their lives, and create a monster they call destiny.” – John Hobbes

I was also asked by Gary Winston Brown to review the sequel to Intruders and the third novel in the ‘Jordan Quest‘ series is The Sin Keeper.

We start this novel with Jordan and her new partner Chris Hanover investigating their first case together; a double homicide, just by touch Jordan can tell what happened here to the unfortunate souls who lost their lives.

“One intruder… male… Two victims; one male, one female…No time to react…sheer terror. He feels empowered, amped up, fueled from having achieved complete and total domination over them.”

Then just to tug at our heartstrings a little bit more…a little puppy enters the fold!

“The dog sat at Jordan’s feet and whined pitifully, perhaps believing that it was about to meet the same terminal fate that had befallen its masters whom but a few short hours ago had been the center of its universe.”

Just a short paragraph about a scared little puppy, is written so heartfelt that you can’t help but get a lump in your throat and want to take the little pup home!

We then meet Commander Ben Egan. Someone who is forced to hide in the shadows, someone who, at first glance, seems like the actions he undertakes, are actions he is forced to take by external forces.

“There is comfort in the darkness. Shadows reach out from the corners of the room in which he hides, shape-shifting allies that serve to camouflage him from those he knows will soon be coming, duty-bound to capture or kill him.”

This idea seems to continue throughout the chapter where we learn of what his actions were and his feelings towards them. The impossible nature of the job he was tasked with.

“He doesn’t know the reason why their death was deemed to be necessary, nor does he care. All he knows is that he was under orders to terminate them and that it was impossible for him to have disregarded the directive…Still, he is unable to shake the feeling that these kills were overtly personal.”

Egan is a man not quite like any other, whilst we are unsure what it is that he possess, it becomes apparent that not all is as it seems. With one clear rule, Egan gives us an insight into what the book will centre around,

“Failure equals death…Project Channeler was a go.”

We then go on to meet Dr Jason Merrick. A scientist who seems to be of great importance and initially, seems nothing more than the average man; that is until he meets another person.

“He took Merrick’s hand, and in doing so felt every nerve in his body come to life.”

After this encounter, nothing will ever be the same again, that’s for certain. Suddenly we realise that this case will be more than just a simple case of homicide. For Dr Merrick is a trailblazer in neuroscience, with breakthrough discoveries.

“…neurocybernetics: merging the mind of man with biologically-hosted computer technology.”

Merrick is Egans handler…he created Egan to be this super-soldier using the neuro technology Merrick invented.

” Being the first of his kind, the scientists had even given him an acronym -GENESIS: Genetic Neurally-Enhanced Subversive Intelligence Supersoldier -and reminded him that the successful completion of phase one field testing would qualify him for advancement to Channeler’s sister-study, code named LEEDA: Life Extending Epidermal Defense Augmentation.”

With every chapter, more names are revealed, despicable actions of theirs revealed but it feels as though something is building. However, we learn that each of these names are linked to each other, that they were all a part of a much bigger plan…The Company, whose boss Kastonov, is otherwise known as ‘ The Sin Keeper.’

“Rosenfeld was dead. For him that meant only one thing. The game had changed.”

The chapters give a sense of suspense, that something bigger is going to happen…something explosive. That everyone’s worst nightmare has now been realised…and there’s no knowing how to stop them.

“…every impossible tale of science fiction that he had ever read about had suddenly just been proven to be true and were not stories born of the imagination after all, but science-fact.”

With each chapter passing, it seems as though the mission keeps getting more and more complicated for Dr Jason Merrick. For not only was he a brilliant scientist, he was also an empty man on the hunt for vengeance which made him a very dangerous man.

“…he had become emotionally obliterated…There were no rules left worth abiding by, no achievements worth a damn, no allegiances worth honoring.”

Pressure continues to mount for Jordan and Hanover who struggle with the significance of the evidence they are discovering.

“Their superiors were already looking for answers. The pressure to solve the case was on. Their newly-formed partnership was already under the microscope.”

Then as suspenseful as the build up was, the explosive action begins and begins with a BANG! Now I’m not going to go into any details because that would ruin all the fun of reading the book for yourselves but let me tell you, you’re in for a shock.

Whilst the rest of the book previous to this was suspenseful in nature, there was less action, however the latter part of the book thoroughly makes up for this!

We even see a potential romance brewing for our two favourite characters too! The ending of this book leaves us with a couple of cliffhangers which adds to this impressive sequel.

I can’t wait to read the next novel and follow Jordan Quest on her next adventure, ‘Mr Grimm’ due to be released in November 2018.
